I heard him speak at FBC Clarksville,TN his simplicity in presenting the Gospel in Isiah chapter 53 was wonderful. I learned some multi-syllable theological words! What a Savior! The clearity he gives is truly a Blessing. He makes the hymn, " I love to Tell the Story" a song to sing from your heart. I think the Lord has take'n a like'in to him in a mighty way. The Southland has given this country a man of God. 11 March 2011

This is one of the issues I have with the church I am currently attending, they are soft on church discipline. Actually church discipline is pretty much none existent, even though the church constitution has a very good section on church discipline. I believe the pastor's heart is in the right place, but he's not counting the cost when it comes to the dangers of wayward membership.

At any rate, there was one point in the article I disagree with. Here's the quote:

"It is common for a man or woman to join a Southern Baptist church, but then to stop participating in worship and fellowship—sometimes for decades. Yet when the church says or does nothing, the individual continues to believe he or she is saved."

I don't know if the author meant it, but it sounded like by not participating in worship or fellowship means a member is not saved. Obviously that is wrong because it infers work salvation. Anyway it jumped out at me. Maybe the writer could have erred on the side of clarity instead of zealousness.

Great article as usual Bill!

Something to consider.....

Mark Dever:

“Many Protestants have begun to think that because the church is not essential to the gospel, it is not important to the gospel. This is an unbiblical, false, and dangerous conclusion. Our churches are the proof of the gospel. In the gatherings of the church, the Christian Scriptures are read. In the ordinances of the church, the work of Christ is depicted. In the life of the church, the character of God himself should be evident. A church seriously compromised in character would seem to make the gospel itself irrelevant.

The doctrine of the church is important because it is tied to the good news itself. The church is to be the appearance of the gospel. It is what the gospel looks like when played out in the lives of people. Take away the church and you take away the visible manifestation of the gospel in the world. Christians in churches, then, are called to practice ‘display evangelism,’ and the world will witness the reign of God begun in a community of people made in his image and reborn by his Spirit. Christians, not just as individuals but as God’s people bound together in churches, are the clearest picture that the world sees of the invisible God and what his will is for them.”

Mark E. Dever, ‘The Church” in A Theology for the Church, edited by Daniel L. Akin (Nashville: Broadman & Holman, 2007), 836.

There are no right or wrong answers to leaving a church. Why? Because there was no such thing as attending "church" in the times of Jesus and the apostles. The church in the Bible is the ekklesia, called out ones to the Church of Jesus Christ; the body of Christ. In the Bible there was a local church of all believers in a city, not one on every corner under a denominational name. Denomination means "divided or division." The first officially organized church was the Roman church. Need I say more. I am a Christian, baptized into the Body of Jesus Christ and I do not belong to or attend any church. I left a month ago and am free at last. God would never command you to leave or stay because He doesn't command you attend in the first place. Follow Jesus, not man and you'll be fine. God bless.

I remember listening to Harold Camping on the radio back in the mid 1980's. Back then I knew he was numerologist, but I thought he was sound on most other things. It wasn't till, I think, 1987 that an event with a caller stopped me from listening to him. The caller was genuinely trying to understand what he had to do to be saved. Now most of us as evangelical christians would have been thrilled if someone came up to us and asked us what they needed to do in order to be saved. We would open a Bible and walk them through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and then invite them to repent of their sins and receive Christ.. Not Harold Camping - nope - he hemmed and hawwed with the caller and wouldn't share with him what he needed to do to get saved, even though, in my opinion, the caller was obviously (if you'll excuse the term) "ripe for the picking." I was so angry with Camping I was literally yelling at the radio in my car! It was then and there I swore never to listen to Camping again. I found out later he was a Hyper Calvinist. Which is one of the things that turned me off to Calvinism in general.

Don't get me wrong, I think the caller got saved regardless of the Camping call, becuase I believe that when a person has the seeking heart that this caller had (obvioulsy the power of the Holy Spirit drawing them) God will bring them someone that will show them the truth and lead them to salvation.

At any rate, false prophets abound and Camping is one of them. I do believe that we are in the last days and Jesus' return is imminent! Even so come Lord Jesus!
